Harley Davidson Motorcycle History
Bill Harley made a project of the first 1000 CC V-Twin in 1909.
In Harley Davidson's history, the V-twin became one of the more recognizable
images of Harley Davidson. V-twin was one of the best selling motorcycle in the Harley Davidson Motorcycle history. Harley Davidson
took a legendary turn in the year 1910 when Harley Davidson brought the "Bar and Shield" logo that was placed on Harley Davidson's motorcycle.

the year 1912 saw further growth of the Harley-Davidson Company. Construction began on a new 6-story factory. Harley-Davidson also became an exporter this year and their first overseas sale was made in Japan.

1915 saw the emergence of the three-speed sliding-gear transmission.
1917, one-third of all Harley-Davidsons were sent overseas to the U.S. Military to fulfill their patriotic call and to aid in the war effort.
The following year, roughly half of the motorcycles produced were sold to the U.S. military. In the end, about 20,000 motorcycles were used in the war, most of them Harley-Davidsons. By this time Harley Davidson was the biggest motorcycle factory in the world with nearly 2,000 dealerships worldwide.
According to Harley Davidson's motorcycle history, V-twin was Harley's specialty, so the company tried to defeat its only remaining rival, Indian.
Harley Davidson continued to make inroads and the 1930's and subsequent years saw more record breaking and award winning Harley-Davidson's. In 1932, the three-wheel Servi-Car was introduced and would become a familiar commercial and police vehicle. Along with appearance changes such as the "eagle" design, which was painted on all Harley-Davidson gas tanks, changes were also made to the engine.
According to Harley Davidson's motorcycle history, following WWII the Harley's market share, as well as its myth, continued to grow. Its main U.S. competitor, Indian Motorcycle, ceased production in the 1950s. And veteran owners, new bikers, and even movies such as Easy Rider raised the Harley Davidson to the status of American icon. Glamorous stars pictured with Harleys, from the early Mack Sennett Studio, to Jayne Mansfield, Elvis Presley, and Peter Fonda, certainly enhanced the company's image. During the 1970s Japanese competition threatened the very
existence of Harley-Davidson that was at that time a subsidiary of American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF). In the 1970's Harley Davidson motorcycles made
history when the cruiser was born. This Harley Davidson motorcycle was known for its sporty
front end with features adapted from FL series.
Harley Davidson motorcycle history in 1981 was rewritten when thirteen members of Harley-Davidson management led by Vaughn Beals purchased the company in a leveraged buy-out. In the subsequent five years the company was streamlined and it refocused its efforts to improve its market share through a major
improvement in product quality. Many of the improved manufacturing techniques were learned from the Japanese. Regardless of the source, Harley-Davidson once again has a strong but not dominant position in the heavy-duty segment of the U.S. motorcycle market.
Harley Davidson's motorcycles history in 1987 began its "Buy Back Program" which offered full trade in value within two years on certain models. Also at this time, the Harley-Davidson Company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange for those interested in taking a financial stake in the company.
