Indian Motorcycle history was started by two racing legends

  • Oscar Hedstrom
  • George Hendee

In the early 20th century motorcycle racing was conducted around curved tracks called velodromes. Motorcycles which raced were aided by pacers known as internal combustion engines. These pacers were not actually living their life through out the race and were breaking down.

Oscar Hedstrom built his own American pacer which turned out be more reliable and outpaced other pacers in the track. Goerge Hendee who was a motorcycle racer had his own motorcycle manufacturing plant in Springfield. Both of them came together started the Hendee manufacturing company which produced the Indian Motorcycles. It was once said by Oscar that they chose the Indian name to make the mark as a wholly American product.
