Yamaha Motorcycle History

Yamaha motorcycle history actually started as a music company in a propeller factory by a clock mechanic. Very soon Yamaha motorcycles became one of the most popular motorcycles producers in the world. Yamaha's famous models include YZF, FZR & YD.

It is back in 1877 that Torakusu Yamaha started with the Nippon Gakki Company that later would become Yamaha Corporation: an important manufacturer of fine musical instruments.

Yamaha Motorcycle history grew, they explored several fields of opportunity in the textile industry and others. During the World War II, the company set up a factory to produce airplane propellers. This plant played an important role in Yamaha's entry to the motorcycle industry as you will see. Yamaha motorcycles started in a music factory called Yamaha Gakki in an abandoned world war II propeller factory.

After the war, Yamaha Corporation had to find new ways to use the tooling and experience that had been accumulated during their times in the airplane industry, and it was then when Yamaha Motor Corporation was founded. Yamaha motorcycle history started with its first motorcycle called Red Dragonfly YA-1.

Chronology of Yamaha Motorcycle History

In 1960 Yamaha released YD model 250cc YDS and 350 cc YR1
In 1970 Yamaha released YR5
In 1969 first four stroke motorcycle was introduced by Yamaha XS-1 , a 650cc English styled bike.

Till the late seventies Yamaha motorcycles was well known in the light and medium sized motorcycles. Yamaha motorcycles dominated the super bike market in the late eighties with the FZR1000 which was a step up from the earlier FZR750. Yamaha motorcycle history's super bike could match the best at it’s time and Yamaha had once again developed a bike which was a huge market success.

Yamaha, known to keep developing their successful models improved the FZR with a bigger engine, an exhaust valve system, new chassis and upside down front fork over the years which kept it’s success guaranteed.

Yamaha tried its hand with much bigger motorcycle with a 1100 cc engine but was unable to garner its past success with the handling of the motorcycle. However Yamaha tasted success in heavy motorcycles with the FJ-1100 launched in 1984. In 1986 Yamaha improved the FJ engine with a 1200 cc engine and the motorcycle was very popular until the mid 1990.

In 1998 Yamaha introduced the YZF-R1 which created a big impact in the world of motorcycles with its 998 cc engine and revolutionary styling. Actually YZF-R1 introduced the way the motorcycles are designed in this century.

Yamaha motorcycles were known for their design and performance started with their first YA-1 and till date. In other words: Yamaha Motorcycles showed the world they had arrived to be considered good and fierce competitors from the beginning. Particularly to Honda and Suzuki.
